In de Middeleeuwen vormde het vanuit Holland en Utrecht de strategische toegangspoort tot de noordelijke Nederlandse provincies. Regelmatig was Lemmer het toneel van veldslagen en gevechten. Later, in de 17e en 18e eeuw, was het de thuishaven voor de Nederlandse koopvaardijvloot die de Oostzee bevoer. Nog later waren het vooral de vissersboten die de haven van Lemmer bevolkten. Die rijke historie is terug te zien in o.a. de oude historische gebouwen die het een geheel eigen karakter geven. Tegenwoordig is Lemmer een warme thuishaven voor de waterrecreant en is er altijd wel iets te beleven. Lekker struinen langs de originele winkeltjes of een drankje drinken op de gezellige terrassen langs de kades. Mensen genieten hier van de langsvarende boten. Het vaarwater door Lemmer is een drukke verbinding tussen de Friese meren en het IJsselmeer.
